English 8 Extra Credit Opportunity
Students were given an extra credit opportunity to begin the second nine weeks grading period. They are to write a Text Criticism on an article in their textbook. This criticism should be a lengthy paragraph (5-8 sentences), at least. The assignment states:
"O. Henry's short stories remain popular with readers in part because they often have surprise endings. Read the article "Manuscripts Found in an Attic" on page 62 of the textbook. What do you think the author means when he describes it as 'a story about O. Henry that was an O. Henry story itself'?"
This extra credit assignment will be due by November 8th, 2013.

Free Fall Tower: Recreate Galileo's famous experiment by dropping objects off the Tower of Pisa. You can drop ping pong balls, golf balls, soccer balls or watermelons. Objects can be dropped in air or no air, with or without a parachute. The speed of each object is shown on a speedometer and a graph.
Gravity Pitch: Imagine a gigantic pitcher standing on Earth, ready to hurl a huge baseball. What will happen as the ball is thrown harder and harder? Find out with the Gravity Pitch Gizmo. Observe the path of the ball when it is thrown at different velocities. Throw the ball on different planets to see how each planet's gravity affects the ball.
Shoot the Monkey: Fire a banana cannon at a monkey in a tree. The monkey drops from the tree at the moment the banana is fired from the cannon. Determine where to aim the cannon so the monkey catches the banana. The position of the cannon, launch angle and initial velocity of the banana can be varied. Students can observe the velocity vectors and the paths of the monkey and banana.
Golf Range: Try to get a hole in one by adjusting the velocity and launch angle of a golf ball. Explore the physics of projectile motion in a frictional or ideal setting. Horizontal and vertical velocity vectors can be displayed, as well as the path of the ball. The height of the golfer and the force of gravity are also adjustable.
Fan Cart Physics: Gain an understanding of Newton's Laws by experimenting with a cart (on which up to three fans are placed) on a linear track. The cart has a mass, as does each fan. The fans exert a constant force when switched on, and the direction of the fans can be altered as the position, velocity, and acceleration of the cart are measured.

After learning about how the American aviation pioneers, Orville and Wilbur Wright, used scientific processes while designing their aircraft, Mr. Wolf's science class took to the skies in an attempt to utilize the scientific method to improve on their own paper airplane design.
Steps of the Scientific Method:
1) Ask a question
2) Form a hypothesis
3) Test the hypothesis
4) Analyze the results
5) Draw conclusions

Advanced English 8: Anne Frank Tree Interactive Monument
The Advanced English 8 students read the play, "The Diary of Anne
Frank" and the novel, The Diary of a
Young Girl. As a culminating activity, the students selected from
six quotes from Anne's diary. The quotes were based on the themes of
freedom, goodness, giving, courage, happiness, and humanity. Each
student wrote an essay about the ways that he or she had been inspired
by the life of Anne Frank to value that specific theme in his or her own
life. The students also created a leaf based on one of the six themes.
Each student wrote Anne's quote on one side of the leaf and his or her
own original quote on the other side of the leaf. This project was based
on the Anne Frank Tree Interactive Monument. Anne Frank often admired
the chestnut tree in the courtyard behind the secret annex and wrote
about the tree in her diary.
For more information, you can visit the Anne Frank Tree Interactive Monument. You can also leave your own quote or message on the virtual tree.

Calendar Enrichment/Bonus
Bonus (Optional): Although many societies base their calendars on the movements of the sun or the moon, a calendar's starting date is often linked to cultural or religious traditions. For example, both the Muslim and the Hebrew calendars are based on the phases of the moon, but they differ in a number of significant ways. Research a calendar used by another culture and find out the cultural significance of the calendar's starting date, the number of days per month, and the number of days per year. Write a short paragraph to explain your findings.
