Chapter 5 - Matter in Motion (Notes) & Exam Announcement

Exam Announcement:

September 28th - Models and Measurement (Ch 1-3 & Ch 1-4)

Note: This upcoming exam was announced to the students last week.  The students are encouraged to study the guided notes and the lab notes they were given on mass, volume, and density.

After the exam, we will move on to chapter 5 (Matter in Motion).  Click on the link below to view the notes for the upcoming chapter.  

Measurement Week!

The Supernovas will be conducting various science labs throughout that week that involved different types of measurement.  The students will focus on using units in the modern metric system while conducting their labs. 

9/20 - Length Lab

Scientific Models

The Supernovas took a hands-on and creative approach to learning about how physical models can be used to replicate an object on a more convenient scale.

Guest Speaker

The Supernova Team would like to welcome Mr. Vacca, of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, to our school on Friday, September 24th, to share his knowledge of the Naturalization Process with the CMS student body.

Thank You for Our Book Covers!

The Supernova students would like to thank the manager at the Shop' n Save in Canonsburg for donating brown paper bags to our team. The students used the brown paper bags to cover their English books for Mrs. Porter's English class. The students were required to design a book cover that represents their interests.

The "Wright" Stuff

After learning about how the American aviation pioneers, Orville and Wilbur Wright, used scientific processes while designing their aircraft, Mr. Wolf's science class took to the skies in an attempt to utilize the scientific method to improve on their own paper airplane design.

Steps of the Scientific Method
1) Ask a question
2) Form a hypothesis
3) Test the hypothesis
4) Analyze the results
5) Draw conclusions
6) Communicate results

"Breaking the Stereotype"

Mr. Wolf's science classes were asked to sketch a scientist.  The majority of students shared certain characteristics in their sketches.   A student volunteer dressed up in each class as the "stereotypical" male scientist as the students named common items in their sketches.  After the activity, the students examined examples of real-life scientists in various fields of work.  The students had the chance to see that women can become scientists, and that not all scientists work in a lab, have crazy hair, carry around beakers, and wear lab coats.

Mission Impossible: "Communication is Key"

Mr. Wolf's science class conducted an activity on the third day of school that emphasized the importance of communication in science.  The students had to work together to accomplish a task that most thought were impossible. 

T-Shirt Slogan Contest

The Supernova team will be ordering T-shirts for the 2010-2011 school year.  Each student has the opportunity to earn bonus points in science class by submitting a new slogan for the back of the T-shirts.  To submit a slogan, simply write your name and idea on a sheet of paper, and then turn the paper into Mr. Wolf.  The students will have the chance to vote on the top 5 slogans, as selected by the Supernova teachers.  The slogan with the most votes will be displayed on the back of the team T-shirts.
